Selecting the performers for the annual Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is no small feat, given the plethora of talent across the nation and beyond. This article unveils the intricacies of the selection process and invites you to be a part of this exciting journey.

The Application Process

The journey to three hours of captivating family entertainment begins with an application. In this digital era, our call for performers spans across the United States and even crosses international borders. Applicants are encouraged to submit photos or a YouTube video showcasing their act, providing a glimpse of what they would bring to the streets of Chicago and the television screen.

Dan Mulka, Executive Director of the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade Foundation, encapsulates our mission: “We aim to craft three hours of dynamic, live entertainment that appeals to our dual audience — those lining State Street and viewers at home on Pluto TV — without the luxury of a dress rehearsal.”

Applications are open for various segments of the parade, including staged performances tailored for our TV audience in the first hour and the traditional forward marching portion of the parade for hours 2 and 3. This flexible approach allows performers to showcase their talents in the most suitable format – and sometimes groups apply for both.

The Selection Committee

“Our selection committee strives for diversity in entertainment, aiming to captivate family members ages one to ninety-nine,” stated Susie Likovic, Unit Coordinator for the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade. The committee prioritizes:

The Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago showcases their native country’s heritage to the nation during the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade.

  • Diverse Stories: Reflecting Chicago’s rich cultural tapestry, we seek acts that narrate compelling stories resonating nationwide.
  • Unique Experiences: From equestrian showcases to performances that offer a rare glimpse into novel entertainment.
  • Jaw-Dropping Moments: We’re on the lookout for acts that inspire awe, fand literally make your jaws drop and “Whoa” in wonder.
  • Enthralling Sounds: High school and college bands of all sizes capable of creating immersive soundscapes that keep the nation tapping along.
  • Joyful Performances: Above all, the ability to spread joy and provide an escape from the mundane is what we seek in every act.
  • Honored Guests: Celebrities from any “list” from A to D, especially those with stories to tell.
  • Fabulous Floats or High-Flying Inflatable Balloons: Decorated delights typically telling the story of those sponsors that support our parade.
